Caraga Travel Guide
There are still some who are unaware of the many tourist attractions in the Caraga. Although it may not be the place that comes to mind when thinking of sightseeing spots in the Philippines, there is actually a lot to see and experience here.
Surfing and Watersports
The lands comprising the region (Surigao Del Sur, Surigao Del Norte, Dinagat, Agusan Del Norte and Sur, the cities of Surigao and Butuan) are surrounded by waters ideal for skimboarding, windsurfing and other similar activities. Particularly attractive to surfers are the waters around Siargao and Lanuza. Such is the popularity of the waves here among adventurers that it has become the site for numerous surfing competitions.
Hiking and Nature Trails
Another of the tourist attractions in the Caraga are the numerous nature trails scattered about the various islands. Most notable are the hills in the city of Butuan, Siargao and also Surigao. Not only are the rugose landscapes ideal for climbing hills and camping, but it can also pose additional challenges and thrills for bikers.
Beaches and Dive Sites
The Philippines has always been known for its lovely beaches and dive sites, and this region is no exception. Among the most popular activities here include island hopping, as it offers you the best way to see the many splendors on the land and seas. Among the best known of these islands are Dinagat, General Island, Guyam and Pig-ot.
The beaches here are enveloped by white sand making it one of the major tourist attractions in the Caraga. Diving into its waters will reveal an assortment of different marine denizens. They include parrotfish, frogfish, marlin, lionfish, crabs, shrimps, lobsters, rays, and many more. Of course the lovely coral reefs and plankton are among the highlights.
Trekking and Mountain Climbing
At the Agusan Valley are some of the most breathtaking natural sceneries in the region. For mountain climbers, there is Mt. Hilong-Hilong and also the mountain peak called Mt. Mas-al. Climbing can be quite a challenge, but the view from the top is spectacular.
If you would rather go trekking, there are several hills in the nearby areas including Santiago and Jabonga. Also in the area is Lake Mainit, one of the largest in the Philippines. One of the most interesting things about trekking through these areas is that they remain unexplored.
Festivals
Other tourist attractions in the Caraga region are its colorful festivals and fiestas. There are numerous celebrations in and around the region and among the most well known are the Kahimunan Festival in Butuan, the Balangay Festival, the Lisagan fiestas, the Bonok-Bonok Maradjao Karadjao and many more.
Other Sightseeing Spots
The mangrove forests in Surigao (specifically in Del Carmen) give you a view of the beautiful greenery as well as several caves, including the Bucas Grande Lagoon. The Agusan Marshland is home to diverse types of birds. For cave explorers the caves of Banbow and Tatol will fascinate them.
The myriad tourist attractions in the Caraga region may seem numerous, but there are a lot more to be uncovered. If you are looking for something new to visit in the Philippines, the Caraga region will be a good choice.
